Have you ever been dealing with an architect? Does your architect present you with a set of drawings that seemed confusing to you?
These are construction documents. Somebody unfamiliar with construction documents would prefer three-dimensional renderings to visualize a space, but contractors can’t build with 3d renderings. These documents are designed to be used by contractors.
We have prepared a brief guide for you to understand construction documents.
Architectural Plans
Often you may have heard that architectural drawings are referred to as “architectural plans” generally, but in reality, a plan drawing is just one of several types of drawings. A floor plan shows everything as though looking down towards the floor, while a Reflected Ceiling Plan will look up towards the ceiling.
Roof Plan
Other common types of plans include Site Plans, Roof Plan, Demolition Plan, etc. Site Plans shows the property and exterior features, site plan may include contour lines which can be seen as horizontal slices of the terrain, taken at some regular vertical spacing. The slopes and the framing of the roof (from top-down) are described by a roof plan. A demolition plan can be seen as a floor plan, but it is a little bit different. Walls, doors, are shown by the demolition plan which notes where things must be removed and changed in order to make room for the new conditions.
Architectural drawings are done to a declared scale, which is just the ratio of the printed size to its real-world built dimension. For instance, a drawing marked “Scale: 1/4” = 1’=0”” means that something printed as one-quarter of an inch in length will represent a real-world length of twelve inches.
Elevation Plans
Elevation and Section Plans
Elevations and Sections are the next most common drawing types aside plans. Rather than looking up or down like a plan does, an elevation drawing looks at a building’s vertical side. Elevation drawings are close to how we physically encounter a building. These drawings show how the shingles on a roof as readily as they do the bricks in the wall, when in reality the roof slope might be so shallow that from a normal vantage point, the singles aren’t actually visible.
